In 14 seasons of Major League Baseball, Chesapeake native David Wright carved out a career that was one of the best in New York Mets franchise history. Drafted by the Mets out of Hickory High School in 2001, Wright would progress steadily through the minors, including a stint with his hometown Norfolk Tides, before making his major league debut in 2004. The third baseman’s impact on the Mets would eventually lead to him being named team captain in 2013, just the fourth in franchise history, a position he would hold until his retirement in 2018. Among his greatest accomplishments with the Mets are being named a National League All-Star at third base 7-times, winning two Gold Gloves, two Silver Slugger Awards, and helping the Mets reach the World Series in 2015. Wright is the Mets all-time leader in hits, runs, RBI’s, doubles, and extra base hits. He finished his career with a .296 career batting average, 1,777 hits, 242 home runs, and 970 runs batted in. While he spent his entire career with the Mets organization, Wright’s impact is still felt here in Virginia through his support of the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters located in Norfolk, where the 8th floor playroom bears his family’s name.
