HALL OF FAME: Billy Wagner (Tazewell) gets 15 more votes from last year, up to 51 percent in seventh year on ballot

Billy Wagner piled up the strikeouts during his 16 seasons playing Major League Baseball and the former Tazewell High School star is down to his final three strikes when it comes to getting elected by the writers who cast votes for the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Wagner garnered 51% of the vote – 201 of the 307 writers put a checkmark beside his name – on his seventh year on the ballot and while that was below the 75 % threshold needed to get elected; it signified a bump from last year and continued momentum for the left-hander’s case. Wagner has three more years remaining on the ballot.

Wagner got 186 votes for 46.4 % in 2021.
