‘Beattie Feathers Bowl’; Bristol native played at Tennessee, coached at N.C. State

The University of Tennessee Volunteers and North Carolina State Wolfpack will play football on Saturday night in something called the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Perhaps a more fitting name for the showdown would be the Beattie Feathers Bowl.

A Bristol native and graduate of Virginia High, Feathers was one of the greatest running backs – and punters – to ever suit up for the Vols and was the Southeastern Conference’s player of the year in 1933.

During an eight-season run as the head coach at N.C. State from 1944-1951 he compiled a 37-38-3 record, led the Wolfpack to their first bowl game appearance as well as their first-ever year-end ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
