The rolled-up program basketball coach Paul Webb always held during games wasn’t glanced at often. He unrolled it. He rerolled it. He did that a lot.
But Webb didn’t use the program much for reference as he sat on the bench or stood in front of it.
“I think he held it to keep from wringing his hands,” said his son, Eddie Webb.
Maybe those programs were good-luck charms because Webb, a Petersburg native, was extraordinarily successful, and probably underappreciated, at Randolph-Macon and then Old Dominion.
Paul Webb died Friday morning at 94, and he will be recalled as one of the winningest coaches in Virginia history, and a friendly and modest person.
“He was probably the ultimate Southern gentleman,” Eddie Webb said.
