A date once marked by sorrow in Hampton Roads will now stand as a lasting tribute to one of the region’s most iconic athletes. The City of Norfolk has officially designated July 14th as Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker Day, transforming the anniversary of his passing into a day of celebration and remembrance.
Whitaker, who died in 2019, is remembered as one of the greatest defensive boxers in the history of the sport. His accomplishments include four world titles across multiple weight classes, an Olympic gold medal, and induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Beyond his decorated career, Whitaker’s influence continued in his hometown, where he mentored and trained the next generation of fighters. His commitment to uplifting local youth through boxing left a lasting impact on the Norfolk community.
