Crozet resident Billy Wagner was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, July 27. A seven-time All-Star with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball, he spent 16 seasons in the Major Leagues playing for the Astros, Phillies, Mets, Red Sox and Braves as a lefthanded relief pitcher. He pitched in 853 games, but never started, and recorded 422 saves, the second most by a lefthander, and he is just the fifth pitcher to reach the 400 number. He is the first player who played for a Division III school—Ferrum College—to be inducted.
