CHARLOTTESVILLE – Mike Cubbage hit a grand slam for his first major-league hit and belted a home run in his final pro at-bat. In his next-to-last year as a scout, the Washington Nationals won the World Series, and Cubbage got a ring.
The Charlottesville native and former Virginia baseball and football player didn’t leave many boxes unchecked from his life in the game.
“He’s done everything in the game,” said former VCU player Jeff Zona, a pro scout who worked with Cubbage with the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals. “He was a really good hitter in the big leagues. He was a great coach, great manager. He was a great major-league scout.
“There’s nothing he didn’t do.”
