Beloved family doctor, John Alfriend Mapp, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on July 18, 2024 at age 91.
Johnny was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on December 8, 1932 to Richard Custis Mapp and Virginia Blair Alfriend Mapp. He grew up in Norfolk with his twin sister, Virginia “Jinsy” Mapp Richardson, sister Anne “Nancy” Mapp Ketner, and brother Richard Custis Mapp, Jr., all of whom have pre-deceased him.
Johnny graduated from Granby High School in 1950, Virginia Military Institute in 1954, and the University of Virginia Medical School in 1958. A natural athlete, “the Norfolk Flyer” excelled in track and football throughout high school and college, winning many awards and setting many records. He was inducted into the Granby High School Hall of Fame, VMI Hall of Fame, and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
