Jennings Culley began his lengthy career in Virginia sports journalism as a determined sixteen-year-old in his hometown of Newport News, Virginia on the staff of the Daily Press. The promising young reporter went on to graduate from Randolph-Macon College and then to serve in World War II. Following the War, Culley spent three years writing for the Roanoke World News and hosting a daily sports commentary show on radio station WSLS. In 1951, Culley made a bold move to Richmond, joining the staff of the Richmond News Leader and serving in a variety of positions, from writer and lead columnist to editor, for more than 40 years. Among his numerous awards and accolades, Culley has been honored by the Virginia Press Association and twice named writer of the year in Virginia by the National Association of Sports Writers and Sportscasters.
